Eating habits and stuff...

Sorry it's been a while since I've updated. Life has just happened. I've had several more tests since my sleep study but don't have the results of those yet.  I will keep everyone posted as to what the Dr says about those.

A few weeks ago we watched a documentary called "Forks over Knifes" which led us to watching "Food, Inc." and then we watched "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead." All three of these were very interesting. What we took from these is that our eating habits are what cause us to be sick, fat, lethargic and so forth. So after watching these, Marty and I decided we were gonna change the way we ate. We cut out all meats, dairy, sugar and most caffeine. We have eaten meat twice since we stopped almost 4 weeks ago. It is amazing the way I feel after changing. We eat mostly vegan, but will occasionally stray to Vegetarian.

I have lost almost 15 lbs since doing this, and I think most of it is the the cokes I cut out. I plan to continue to eat this way even after I have my surgery. The whole point of my surgery is for me to be healthy, and this new way of healthy eating is only going to help me in the long run. I love that my husband is doing it with me because I know he is getting healthier too. He has lost almost 20 lbs since we started.  I guess that's it for now.. I will update again soon. Thanks for reading!

Sleep Study results....

well the verdict is in from my sleep study. I do not have sleep apnea. I do however have nocturnal hypoxia. My Oxygen Saturation drops while I am sleeping. It dropped as low as 76% while I was having my study done. This is not a good thing. So now I have to wear 2 liters of oxygen at night while I sleep (or during the day in my case after I get off work). In one month the neurologist wants me to repeat the sleep study, but only looking at my O2 saturation this time. Since they don't know for sure what is causing the desat, I now have to have a full pulmonary workup along with a cardiology workup. I never realized I was so sick until now. I always thought I was healthy, just big.. This has been a real eye opener for me. March can't get here soon enough!!

Sleep Study

So last night I had my sleep study. It was interesting to say the least. I wasn't really sure what to expect because I don't really know anyone who has ever had one. I arrived at the facility at 7 pm. When I got there the tech showed me to my room, which was very homey.. I had a queen size bed, a recliner, a tv tray, a celling fan with a dimmer switch on the wall next to the bed, and a 32 inch flat screen tv with basic satellite. So when I first got there I had to watch a video about what was going to happen. Simple enough. Then the tech came in and explained to me how it was going to work, and to finish filling out some paper work. So he said he would give me a 5 minute warning of when he would be in to attach me to my leads. I watched about 30 minutes of tv before he gave me my warning at which point I had to go get into my pjs and get ready for bed. It took about 45 minutes for all the leads to be attached. I felt like an alien. There were sensors in my nose and around my chest and stomach. I slept pretty good being attached to all the wires. I was woken up 3 times by the tech having to fix leads. About 6:30 in the morning the tech came and woke me up for the day. So all in all it was a pretty good experience. I should know the results either Wednesday or Thursday.  Next up... Psych eval...

Now we sit and wait...

So my first appointment was this morning. I was very impressed. Dr. Bell came in and introduced himself, went over some of the information I filled out. He asked if I had any questions. I didn't because I have been doing my research and know exactly what I am getting into. He said ok lets go make you some appointments. So here are the appointments I am waiting for now..

  • Sleep study (apparently I have like a 98% chance of having sleep apnea)
  • Psychologist (have to make sure my mental health is good)
  • Nutrition Class which I can do on Thursday
  • And I have to go to the clinic once a month to get weighed and fill out my progress note for my Dr. supervised diet.
So this is where I am in my journey. I will keep everyone posted when I find out more...

WOW!! Who Knew?

This is your brain on food...

Thats right. A study that recently came out discovered that food addiction is really true. When you have a food addiction, your brain sends the same signals as if you were addicted to a drug only the drug is food...

Here is the article with the study...

Medical News: Food Addiction Acts in Brain as Drug Addiction Does - in Psychiatry, Addictions from MedPage Today

I kind of always knew I had an addiction to food, but I thought maybe I was just imagining it. Good to know that is really can be an addiction, and gastric bypass is one of the "sobriety" tools used to kick the addiction...
